11/10/26 Khumbulani Sibanda - 1 Timothy 4:1-10
1) How can we recognise teaching that leads us away from Jesus?
Sermon quote: “We need to look at the message that they bring, and is that message in line with what the word says.”
1 Timothy 4:1 says: “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith.”
Discussion notes: God warns his people because he wants them to remain rooted in the truth. Khumbulani reminded us that confidence, charm and impressive experiences don’t guarantee that someone’s teaching is trustworthy. What makes a teacher convincing to you, and how could you check what they’re saying against Scripture?
2) Why does it matter that Jesus himself is the truth?
Sermon quote: “Christ is the only way that we can reach the Father.”
John 14:6 says: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
Discussion notes: Jesus doesn’t simply offer helpful advice; he brings us into relationship with the Father through his death and resurrection. Knowing the truth means trusting him and remaining faithful to his teaching. Where do you feel pressure to treat Jesus as just one option among many, and what helps you hold onto him with confidence and humility?
3) What helps us respond honestly when God’s Word challenges our desires?
Sermon quote: “There are many many, many verses in this book that I can take and turn so that they fit what I want to say.”
John 8:31 says: “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.”
Discussion notes: Khumbulani challenged us to read Scripture ourselves, rather than depending entirely on the person preaching. Following Jesus includes allowing his Word to correct us, even when we’d prefer a different answer. When have you been tempted to look for a verse that supports what you already want, and what would help you listen more openly?
4) How can we enjoy God’s gifts without letting them take his place?
Sermon quote: “So God has given us good things around us, and we need to exercise restraint in all those things.”
1 Timothy 4:4 says: “Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks.”
Discussion notes: Paul challenges teaching that treats marriage and certain foods as obstacles to holiness. God’s good gifts invite gratitude, while loving the Giver helps us enjoy them wisely. Which ordinary gift could you thank God for today, and how might you recognise when enjoying something is becoming dependence or overindulgence?
5) What would training for godliness look like in your everyday life?
Sermon quote: “You start to develop spiritual muscles when you meditate on the word.”
1 Timothy 4:7 says: “Instead, train yourself to be godly.”
Discussion notes: Training involves returning to something regularly, including when we don’t feel particularly motivated. Reading Scripture, praying and putting what we learn into practice help us grow as we depend on God’s grace; they don’t earn his acceptance. What small, realistic habit could help you become more like Jesus this week?
6) How can we help one another build a life centred on Jesus?
Sermon quote: “Within the Christian community, you will have opportunities to build and be built.”
1 Timothy 4:6 says: “If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus.”
Discussion notes: Timothy is called to nourish others with the same truth that nourishes him. Khumbulani reminded us that Christian growth happens within a community where Jesus is the foundation and we each have something to contribute. Who helps you stay faithful to Christ, and how could you encourage someone else through Scripture, prayer or practical support this week?
