18/10/26 Matt Banks - 1 Timothy 4:11-16

1) What might people learn about following Jesus from the way you speak and live?

Sermon quote: “You can't control how people look at you. But you can control what they see.”

1 Timothy 4:12 says: “Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live…”

Discussion notes: Paul calls Timothy to a faith that can be seen in ordinary life, including speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. What do people close to you see in your daily life that points towards Jesus? Is there one area where you’d like to become a clearer example?

2) What does the story of David remind us about how God sees people?

Sermon quote: “God's way is subversive of the human way of working in the world.”

1 Samuel 16:7 says: “People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Discussion notes: Matt connected Timothy’s youth with the way God has often challenged human assumptions about who is useful or ready to serve. Where might your instincts about someone’s age, experience or appearance differ from what God sees? How could that change the way you encourage others?

3) Why does it matter that our actions reflect what we say we believe?

Sermon quote: “What we think and what we do are supposed to be two sides of the same coin.”

James 1:22 says: “But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says.”

Discussion notes: The sermon explored how our choices can shape us as well as express what we believe. Where have you noticed a gap between your convictions and your habits? What small act of obedience might help bring them closer together?

4) Why should Scripture have such a central place in the life of a church?

Sermon quote: “What we all need is God's word.”

1 Timothy 4:13 says: “Focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.”

Discussion notes: Paul points Timothy towards Scripture as the church’s source of truth and nourishment. How can we make room to listen carefully to God’s word, rather than relying only on our own opinions or the personality of a leader? What helps you receive Scripture with humility?

5) How might you use a gift God has given you, or help someone else use theirs?

Sermon quote: “Give attention to what God has given you.”

1 Timothy 4:14 says: “Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received…”

Discussion notes: Timothy is urged to use the gift entrusted to him, and the sermon encouraged the church to help one another recognise and develop what God has given. What ability or opportunity might you be overlooking? Who could you encourage or ask for encouragement as you take a next step?

6) What could help you persevere in a way that points others towards Jesus?

Sermon quote: “Your perseverance in the faith. Your constant living towards God. As I said at the start, it's telling a story to other people.”

1 Timothy 4:16 says: “Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right…”

Discussion notes: Paul connects perseverance with care for both our own faith and the people who hear us. Our faithfulness doesn’t earn salvation; it bears witness to the gospel and can help others see Jesus. What would help you stay attentive to your life and teaching this week?
